The nominations for this year's Academy Awards are out

.The nominations for this year's Academy Awards are out. But with Avatar and The Hurt Locker leading the way, there are precious few surprises in the main categories.

Having blown away all competition at the box office James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar faces a tougher battle on March 7th, tied as it is on nine nominations with war drama The Hurt Locker. With the number of Best Film nominees rising from five to ten, all the expected contenders are present and correct with Avatar and Locker again facing competition from Golden Globe rivals Up In The Air, indie hit Precious (both totalling six nominations) and Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (bagging an impressive eight nods).

The Hurt Locker 01Jeremy Renner in The Hurt LockerThe directors of those five make up the Best Director category, Avatar's James Cameron up against ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Up In The Air's Jason Reitman, Precious helmer Lee Daniels and enfant terrible Tarantino.

Rounding out the field for Best Film are sci-fi yarn District 9, sports drama The Blind Side, the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man, animated smash Up, and sole British hope An Education.

Slumdog Millionaire
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (2009)
Danny Boyle's enchanting Anglo-Indian drama brought the streets of Mumbai vividly to life...and also landed him with a best director Oscar.
The movie, which followed the efforts of a young Indian boy (played by Harrow's Dev Patel) to find his childhood sweetheart, landed eight Oscars, including best picture.
Chris Tarrant, the host of the UK version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, featured in Danny Boyle's debut film Shallow Grave: he appears as the host of another TV quiz show Lose A Million but only on a TV screen.
Oscar Statuette 01The one they all want...He's only 13 and a half inches tall and weighs 8 and a half pounds, but this little fella can propel mere actors into the realms of superstar and add millions to a movie's box office . Everyone who has ever dreamed of making it in Hollywood wants to own one.

It is of course the most famous 24-carat plated gold man, the Oscar statuette.
